A.k.a. How to Dress like Your Favorite Insta Gals this Spring
That’s right, there is one month left before the insanely beautiful weather becomes the expectation. To prepare I have decided to make a list of some of the trends that we’ll be seeing this spring. Hopefully it will give you some ideas about how to wear them.
The Puff Sleeve
I don’t know about anyone else, but my life goal is to become an actual princess, or at least close. (Clearly the opposite of the Duchess of Sussex’s goal.) But, no matter what your dreams are, the puff sleeve trend will give you the confidence you need to work towards them. Big shoulders and flowing arms are signs of power in any time period.
This top is one that I was particularly intimidated by when I first got it. There’s so much to this shirt that it had to be the center of attention, but I wasn’t sure how I would wear it. This shirt is so much fun and whenever I wear it, mostly with plain jeans, I get so many compliments. Which makes my apprehension completely disappear.
I am an absolute sucker for texture when it comes to clothes. I’ll jump on any chance to wear velour! The density of the velour adds great definition to the puff sleeve. That means no one confuses those shoulders for a pair (or three) of 80’s shoulder pads. This outfit is perfect for the tough transition days when it’s too cold for a sundress but you aren’t cold enough to go grab your coat.
Wide-leg Pants
Does anyone else remember the sad days of 2012 or so when we would run around in skinny jeans so tight that your foot had to emerge at just the right angle to get them on? For those still feeling the dig of those seams, you can breathe a sigh of relief, the days of the skinny jean are numbered. While they aren’t out of style, the big cut this year is the wide-leg and I am here for it! Hopefully these outfits will get you excited about my favorite of the spring trends too.
Is there honestly anything better than feeling comfortable while still knowing you’re more dressed up than a pair of leggings? These jeans are so comfortable, they are high-waisted, because low cut jeans belong in the same hazy memories as overly skinny jeans, and they add the right amount of length to my legs.
The wide-leg trend is not just for jeans! Feel free to bring this one to the office with a pair of trousers like these. The paper bag waist provides definition and the pleats are professional without sacrificing the free flowing comfort of the pants. Especially as things warm up this is a great way to stay comfortable at your summer internship or on the job.
The Boyfriend Blazer
The boyfriend blazer, its your best friend when it comes to looking polished without trying to hard. There’s something comforting about wearing something just a bit longer or bigger than normal (see my love of wide-leg pants). This blazer nails that feeling. The longer hem and dropped button says, “I can do make this deal in my sleep!” without going too far.
Wearing this blazer makes me feel like I should be hanging out at a country club smoking cigars with the boys and discussing tomorrow’s polo match. The tailoring is sophisticated and there is something about the low button and longer hem that just feels so sexy. Paired with these moto jeans and a crop top this look feels like power.
I’ll admit, I actually do like subtle shoulder pad. I mean does anything say, “I have it all together like a strong shoulder? The plaid made me feel like I was a spoiled rich kid at a fancy boarding school in the English countryside. So, I paired it with some leather leggings (because I also have dreams of being the rebel of my fancy boarding school).
The Classics
It’s always a sunny day when wardrobe staples come back in full force because you have so many new options. This goes beyond the white t-shirt that fits so well you bought 6 more (just in case) and should be treated with the same respect as the last bottle of your favorite nail polish. This spring the classics are not only in style, they are on trend.
The trench coat! From the actual trenches to the best hanger in every fashionista’s closet a good trench coat keeps you dry in the rain and warm on a chilly day without ever looking like it has to try. This one just happens to be particularly spring like with it’s subtle pink and light, airy fabric. I could wear this jacket everyday and still convince myself it was a fresh look.
Tweed. It’s classic, elegant, thick enough to hide anything worth hiding, and never fails to make me feel expensive. This dress also has a baby doll style to it that gives it a retro feeling that I strive for. I feel like I could walk the streets of 60’s London in this dress. The heels are always fun but I have worn this with my white high top sneakers when I want to be casual. You can never go wrong with one of these!
These are just some of the spring trends that I am particularly excited to wear this spring but there are plenty more that you’ll probably see around. All these trends are wearable and comfortable so when you are ready to enjoy the wonderful world of spring your clothes with be ready to handle the challenge. Let me know if there are any other trends that you are excited about or show me how you style the trends listed.
xoxo,
Emelie
